A run of letters and digits counts as one word, so well-known compounds stay single words while punctuation separates them.
What is the difference between the two character counts?
One includes spaces and line breaks; the other ignores them. Forms that count spaces need the first number, while some publishing limits use the second.
Can I count a very long document?
Yes. The count runs in the page itself and no text is sent anywhere, so length is limited only by how much the browser can hold.
